Props & Shout outs to Michael Shenker at the Montreal Gazette

Howdy!

As some of you must realize, I try to read all the local newspapers, all the national newspapers, and some international newspapers, along with a variety of other things, in order to stay up to date on the visual arts. It occurred to me today, that Mr. Shenker (the Arts and Life Editor at the Montreal Gazette) made a decision yesterday that deserves to be applauded.

If you haven't noticed there's a movie opening this week about some murders in Sainte Catherines, Ontario about 15 years ago. According to just about everybody who has seen it, it is a really really bad movie, made worse by the subject matter. La Presse says; "it is not worth moving to go see it." Radio Canada says; "...to flee." Le Devoir has a front page article, and a review, too. Le Journal De Montreal website reprints a CP review. The Toronto Star has an article, as does the Globe & Mail, CJAD, and I'm certain if I went looking just about every media outlet in the country (in both languages) would have something. I guess a variation on the "if it bleeds, it leads" cliche about tabloid journalism that sometimes creeps into a broadsheet.

Except for the Montreal Gazette. And as far as I can tell it was either John Griffin's idea or Mr. Shenker's, and as Mr. Shenker is the editor of the section, and probably does not get enough credit, I'll toss some his way. Good on ya! Mike!
